Offshore vs Nearshore vs Onshore Staffing: Differences Explained
Onshore, nearshore and offshore staffing differ in cost, time zone and talent pool. Here is what each means and how to pick the right one for a role.

These three terms describe where your team member is based relative to you. Each comes with a different balance of cost, convenience and choice.
The three models
Onshore. The person lives in your country. Same time zone or close to it, same employment rules, and the highest cost.
Nearshore. The person lives in a neighbouring or nearby country. Time zones overlap naturally, and costs are lower than onshore.
Offshore. The person lives in a distant country. Costs are lowest and the talent pool is largest. Time zones differ unless the person works your hours.
Side by side
| Onshore | Nearshore | Offshore | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Highest | Medium | Lowest |
| Natural time-zone overlap | Full | Most of the day | Little, unless hours are matched |
| Talent pool | Limited to your country | Regional | Very large |
| Travel for meetings | Easy | Possible | Rare |
| Typical use | On-site and regulated roles | Collaborative roles | Computer-based, ongoing roles |
The time-zone question
The main objection to offshore staffing has always been time difference. There are two ways it is handled:
- Partial overlap. The person works their local day and overlaps with you for a few hours. Fine for independent work, weak for sales or support.
- Matched hours. The person works your full business day. For you, it feels the same as a colleague in another office.
Always ask a staffing provider which one they offer. "Overlap" and "your exact hours" are not the same thing.
What really decides quality
Geography matters less than three things:
- Skill and experience in the role.
- Clear communication, spoken and written.
- Availability during your working hours.
A strong candidate who meets all three will outperform a weaker one nearby. Check them directly: ask for work samples, hear the person speak, and confirm the hours in writing.
Which model for which role
- Must be on site or locally licensed: onshore.
- Needs frequent in-person meetings: onshore or nearshore.
- Done on a computer and phone: offshore works well. That includes SDRs, media buyers, social media managers, GTM engineers and assistants.
Cost in context
Offshore rates are a fraction of a local salary, even before taxes, benefits and recruiting. For a full list of what a local employee costs, see the true cost of hiring an employee.
Questions to ask any provider
- Does the person work my exact hours or only overlap?
- Is the person full-time and dedicated to me?
- How were they vetted, and can I see proof?
- What happens if the hire is not a fit?
- Who handles contracts and payroll?
How Zenstack works
Every Zenstack hire is full-time, dedicated to one client, and works that client's exact hours. Candidates are experienced and already vetted, and each sends a 2-minute video introduction. Rates start at $12 an hour. See what remote staffing is or compare staff augmentation vs outsourcing.
Frequently asked questions
Is offshore staffing lower quality?
Not by nature. Quality depends on vetting, experience and communication. Checking work samples and hearing a candidate speak tells you more than their location.
What is the difference between offshore staffing and outsourcing?
With offshore staffing, a dedicated person joins your team and you direct their work. With outsourcing, a company delivers a service using its own team and methods.
Can an offshore team member work my business hours?
Yes, if the provider offers matched hours. Every Zenstack hire works the client's exact hours.
